Produced from 50 year old vines of Garnacha and 20 year old vines of Syrah planted in a unique combination of soil; silica, with abundant mother rock, granite, present in the parcels, on a sandy and clay base. This type of soil is unique in Méntrida with only some zones of Galicia having the same soil in Spain. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel followed by 6 months aging in 500 liter barrels with the intent that larger oak will allow more of the intense fruit character to show in the finished wine.

Bright ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas are given depth and a brooding character by tobacco and espresso. Shows fresher red fruits on the palate but this is essentially a square-shouldered, youthfully stern wine. Loosens up with air, offering good finishing energy and fresh cherry/berry flavors. Definitely give this some air.

Méntrida is a D.O. located in the northeast corner of the province of Toledo, and as this wine indicates conclusively, it can be the source of some very good juice. It is quite ripe, and the stated alcohol of 14.5% shows that, and yet it is neither pruny nor hot, but rather quite supple and nuanced, with lovely fruit that recalls both red and black cherries and shows (thankfully) very little wood to intrude on the gorgeous fruit. There's surprising brightness and purity to the wine in light of the rather high alcohol, and it would be a great choice for partnering with late summer grilled meats.

Mentrida is an island wine region in the middle of central Spain, and this blend of Garnacha and Syrah is lively, juicy and delicious. The nose is deep and luscious, with mounds of cassis and blackberry. The spunky palate shows big tannins but plenty of offsetting fruit and pulp. Finishing notes of chocolate and pepper leave a positive lasting impression. Should age for several more years.
