Sebastiani Chardonnay Sonoma County 2008
Our Sonoma County Chardonnay is true to its appellation. Cooler coastal vineyards provide structure and minerality in this wine. The warmer inland sites provide weight and viscosity. The aromatics are strong with ripe pears, apples, toasted bread, vanilla and crème brûlée. The richness of the palate is offset by balanced acidity.
Vineyard Notes:
A warm, dry winter was followed by a damaging frost in late April that drastically decreased our yields. Summer was very dry with less fog than usual, further depressing vigor. Due to low yields, we began harvesting immediately after Labor Day and finished in mid-October. Our intrepid and historic Clone 4 was the one of the stars of the vintage producing a structured, mineral style with more restrained tropical fruit flavors.
Winemaker Notes:
We hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed the grapes then racked approximately half of the juice (mainly from cooler sites) into barrels for barrel fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation. The remainder was tank fermented at cooler temperatures topreserve bright fruit notes and acidity. Select yeast strains, including indigenous, were utilized, depending on the vineyard. Most of the stainless steel fermented lots were racked with light lees into neutral barrels in December/January to develop and mature the flavors without oak impact. We aggressively stirred the barrels in April to early May to release more texture and flavors. After settling in the barrel for a month, the wine was racked off the lees, fined, filtered and bottled late August 2009.
