This wine is sourced from 60-80 year vines in La Horra and Quemada, villages in the Burgos District of Ribera del Duero. Made by Isaac Fernandez, the winemaker for Neo and Palomero, this wine spent 6 months in a combination of 70% French and 30% American oak after fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
Literally translated as “the art of living” this wine is homage to those who have inspired us in the quest to bringing great Spanish wines to the US. This vintage is dedicated to Paco Pena, general manager of Taberna del Alabardero restaurant in Washington D.C.

Many consumers have been habituated to thinking of Ribera del Duero as a source for high-end reds but not for ones ringing up for $20 or less. However, the region can produce excellent wines in a fruity style and price them affordably by laying off the oak. That's exactly what you'll taste in this bottling, which features Tempranillo (or rather, Tinto Fino, as the grape is called locally) that is very rich and generous but still marvelously pure, with vivid notes of black cherry and just a little spice around the edges.

Deep red. Fresh raspberry and cherry on the nose, with a mineral component adding energy. Deeper blackberry and blueberry on the palate, with baking spices and an exotic orange peel quality lending focus. Suavely combines depth with vivacity, and finishes with good clarity and persistence. Like the Vivir, Vivir, this is a steal.

The 2006 El Arte de Vivir is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 60-80 years old vines. The wine spent 6 months in French and American oak. Dark crimson-colored, it offers more fruit and structure than its unoaked sibling. It will evolve for 1-2 years but a hard finish kept my score down. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Three vintages into this project, and it seems like Arte de Vivir has found its stride. At this price, finding a good Ribera wine is akin to the proverbial needle in the haystack; so seek out this meaty, ripe number and dig into its plum and berry body that’s backed by vanilla, coconut and good tannic structure.
