Ares Crianza 2004
Region: Rioja D.O.Ca.
Winery: DIOS ARES, BODEGAS

Grapes: 100% Tempranillo
Vintage: 2004
Color: Red

This wine is a project of winemaker, Carlos San Pedro of Bodegas Pujanza, in Rioja Alavesa which started with the 2001 harvest. The intent it to show a more traditional style with complexity coming from extended aging in oak and bottle. The grapes come from different vineyards in and around the village of La Guardia. Fermented in stainless steal vats with regular pumping over. 60% of the wine made malolactic fermentation in the tank and 40% in oak barrel. Aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

Deep red. Intensely floral nose displays vivid rose- and lavender-accented blackberry and cassis aromas underscored by spicy minerality. There's a deep, brooding quality to the chewy dark berry flavors, and a solid tannic structure underneath. Floral pastille flavors develop on the firm, focused finish. Give this a year or so to unwind.

The 2004 Ares Crianza is made by Carlos San Pedro of Bodegas Pujanza. The wine is partially barrel-fermented and is aged for 12 months in French and American oak. Deep crimson-colored, it has an expressive nose of cedar, spice box, leather, black cherry, and blackberry. Elegant and balanced, the wine has plenty of silky fruit, enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a moderately long finish. Drink it through 2020.

Dark red. Musky cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by pungent underbrush and herbs. Cherry and plum flavors are ripe and fleshy, with dried herb and sweet chewing tobacco flavors adding complexity. Picks up cracked pepper and orange peel qualities on the finish, which is soft and moderately long. This seems fully mature.

Blackberry and boysenberry flavors shine in this lively red. Vanilla and spice notes add depth. Modest tannins give way to a sweet, floral finish. Drink now through 2012.

This dark ruby colored modern 100% Tempranillo produced by winemaker, Carlos San Pedro of Bodegas Pujanza, offers aromas of clean ripe black cherry fruit with a touch of herbs and attractively integrated oak. On the palate, it is soft and concentrated with lush ripe fruit, and notes of chocolate and licorice. The wine is also beautifully balanced with soft round tannins and a long lasting finish.
